How I managed to find a job in the UK

Hiya !

It's been a pretty long time since I have posted my last article on this blog... actually... this one was written 2 weeks ago, but I didn't notice I forgot to... publish it.

So, in this article, I'll tell you about my quest for a job here, in the UK.

1st part : When I was still motivated (and still hoping for a paid job)

The first day I arrived here, I went to Teddington's broad street to look for a job. As I have not been able to find anything on the internet before arriving here, I thought speaking directly to different managers would have helped me. At first, I wanted to follow the advice everybody gave me : "you should try to ask in restaurants and cafés, they often need people". This is how I came to go in each of them to ask if the manager had paid jobs available or not. The answer was no. The reasons ?

- "We're just after Christmas, it's really quiet, you should come back in summer"
- "We're just after Christmas, it's really quiet, you should have come here two months ago and it would have been ok"
- "Two months is too short"

After many failures, I decided to do the same street again, but this time, I asked in every single shop that was there (even in libraries, gyms, etc.). Unfortunately, nobody seemed to need me, even if some of the managers still wanted to keep my CV "just in case" (a nice way to tell me "You'll never work here, you, French long haired dude").

The 3 following days, I went to different neighbour cities (Wimbledon, Kingston, Richmond...) to continue my researches, but I have not heard anything else than the usual :

- "We're just after Christmas, it's really quiet, you should come back in summer"
- "We're just after Christmas, it's really quiet, you should have come here two months ago and it would have been ok"
- "Two months is too short"

At least, I have been able to talk to many people and to visit the area... which was quite amazing !

2nd Part : When I lost my motivation (and was only hoping for an unpaid job)

After approximately 5 days, and above all after loosing about 60£ in bus for nothing, I lost motivation. There was just NOTHING at all. I couldn't find anything, even in the family I live with or their relatives. This is why I decided, then, to look for an unpaid job (I thought it was easier to get one... haha).

I went back to every cities I went before, but this time, I also went in charity shops and volunteering recruitment centres... and a lot of them needed staff and volunteers !... but only for a couple of hours a week (with no possibility to work in more than one shop in the same time). This was not enough to validate my internship, so I could not accept their job offers...

3rd Part : When I began to despair (and stopped hoping to find any kind of job here)

Two weeks after arriving in the UK, I still had not found any job. It was quite worrying, because my stay in England isn't unlimited !

Fortunately, something unexpected happened to me... When I went to Hampton Hill (a small city located 10 minutes walking far from Teddington) to top up money on my Oyster Travel Card, I saw a Charity Shop that was closed when I first went in the city... and when I asked them if they needed volunteers for the shop... they accepted to hire me for about 28 hours a week ! It happened exactly like this !

Two weeks of researches have not been successful, but one minute of random sightseeing saved my life. What's the conclusion of all of this ? I should cut my hair (...no way, just kidding).

Anyway, since then, I work almost everyday in this shop ! I'll write an article about it later !

じゃね !
